The Society for Mitochondria Research and Medicine (SMRM) is a multidisciplinary scientific forum committed to advancing mitochondrial research, medicine, and clinical translation in India and across the globe. Bringing together clinicians, scientists, academicians, and researchers, SMRM serves as a dynamic platform for fostering collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange in the rapidly evolving field of mitochondrial biology and disease.
India’s remarkable genetic diversity, large population, and high prevalence of inherited disorders present unique opportunities and challenges in mitochondrial medicine. Mitochondrial disorders are among the most complex human diseases, often affecting multiple organ systems with diverse and overlapping clinical manifestations.
In this landscape, SMRM was formally inaugurated during the landmark Indo–US meeting on “Mitochondrial Research and Medicine” held at CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in January 2007, jointly organized by Prof. Keshav K. Singh and Prof. K. Thangaraj. The society aims to bridge the gap between bench and bedside by promoting excellence in research, diagnostics, patient care, and therapeutic development.
Since its inception, SMRM has played an important role in strengthening the mitochondrial research community by facilitating scientific dialogue, interdisciplinary collaborations, training initiatives, and engagement between clinicians, basic scientists, and patient communities.
